Volvo Canada Accelerates Electrification: A Comprehensive Overview of 2023 Mild Hybrid Powertrains

Volvo Canada has rolled out a ground-breaking announcement for the 2023 model year, revealing that their entire vehicle lineup will consist solely of mild-hybrid, hybrid, or fully electric vehicles. This ambitious move aligns with the Swedish automaker's future-focused objective to offer only pure electric vehicles by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2040.

The electrified powertrains to be featured across the Volvo range, badged as B4, B5, and B6, now come standard in the popular XC90 and XC40 SUVs, as well as the V60 and V60 Cross Country. These mild hybrids, charged by regenerative braking energy recovery, deliver smoother acceleration, increased fuel savings, and lower emissions, offering a noteworthy improvement in real-world driving scenarios.

Canadian customers are given a broad spectrum of electrified options to suit their lifestyle, driving habits, and access to charging facilities. The mild hybrid powertrains promise increased efficiency compared to their T4, T5, and T6 predecessors, providing a solution for customers without easy access to charging facilities as these vehicles never need to be plugged in.

In terms of power and efficiency, the B4 offers a 2.0L turbocharged engine delivering 194 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, with a fuel economy (NRCan) of 10.0 / 7.6 / 8.9 (city/highway/combined) L/100km, depending on the vehicle.

The B5 boasts a similar 2.0L turbocharged engine but with a more potent 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, offering fuel economy (NRCan) of 10.3 / 8.2 / 9.4 (city/highway/combined) L/100km.

For those seeking more power, the B6 comes with a 2.0L supercharged and turbocharged engine producing 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, with a fuel economy (NRCan) of 11.1 / 8.7 / 10.0 (city/highway/combined) L/100km.

Volvo Canada’s shift to mild hybrid powertrains is a significant step towards greater sustainability in the automotive sector, enabling customers to contribute to a greener future without compromising on performance or convenience.
